A 29-year-old woman was murdered in south Delhi on Friday by a mob after she dressed up as a cat to celebrate her mother’s birthday, police said.
Police said the victim, whose name has not been released, was walking home from the railway station in south India’s capital when a group of people followed her and began beating her, hitting her on her head and chest and pushing her down.
She was taken to the nearby Red Fort hospital and later died.
The victim’s mother, a school teacher, told police the group was angry because the woman was wearing a skimpy outfit to celebrate the birthday of her daughter, who is in her late 20s.
The group had been waiting for the woman to return home, but she refused to go home, the police said in a statement.
The mob beat her with sticks and pushed her down, they said.
On Friday night, a group was waiting for her when the woman finally returned home and told them that she had a cat that was being kept as a pet.
“She told them about the cat and how it was her mother who gave it to her,” said the police statement.
“The mob then started beating the woman with sticks, including with a large iron rod.
The victim managed to get away from the mob and ran away.
She then called a friend who then alerted the police,” the statement said.
The girl’s body was found on Friday night by a resident of the nearby town, police sources said.
